The Stranger Things timeline spans just four years of in-universe time — from November 1983 to the events of Season 5 in 1987 — but it covers an enormous amount of story. This guide breaks down the key events of every season in chronological order, so you can see how the Upside Down grew from a single gate into a full-scale invasion.
The series begins on November 6, 1983, when Will Byers disappears on his way home from a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Over the following week, his friends Mike, Dustin, and Lucas discover Eleven — a young girl who escaped from Hawkins National Laboratory. Meanwhile, Joyce Byers communicates with Will through Christmas lights, and Chief Hopper uncovers the lab's cover-up.
The season ends with Eleven defeating the Demogorgon and disappearing into the Upside Down, and Will returning home — but not quite the same.
Almost a year after Will's rescue, he begins experiencing visions of a massive shadow entity in the Upside Down sky — the Mind Flayer. Will is possessed by the entity, and the party races to burn out the infection before it consumes him.
Meanwhile, Eleven goes to Chicago to find Kali, and Max Mayfield arrives in Hawkins. The season ends with the gate closed — for now.
In the summer of 1985, a new Soviet operation beneath Starcourt Mall reopens the gate. The Mind Flayer returns in physical form, possessing Billy Hargrove and building a body from melted Hawkins residents. The season ends with Billy's redemption and death, Hopper's apparent sacrifice, and Eleven losing her powers.
Season 4 is where the full mythology comes together. Vecna — revealed to be Henry Creel, Subject 001 — is targeting Hawkins teens through their trauma, opening four gates that begin to merge the Upside Down with the real world. Meanwhile, Hopper survives in a Russian prison, and Eleven regains her powers in California.
The season ends with Max in a coma, Eddie Munson dead, and Hawkins split by a massive gate.
Season 5 picks up directly after the events of Season 4, with Hawkins partially consumed by the Upside Down. The final season resolves the conflict between Vecna and the party once and for all — closing the story that began in 1983.
One of the most impressive things about Stranger Things is how tightly the timeline is constructed. The events of each season build on the last, and small details from early episodes — Will's "true sight," Eleven's connection to the Demogorgon, the lab's experiments — all pay off in later seasons. Knowing the timeline makes a rewatch significantly richer.
